WHO AM I?

My name is Sydney Osborne! I’m a chicago-based graphic designer, photographer, creator, mover, and the list goes on. I’m an artist at heart, and most enjoy combining my passion for graphic design with my love for music and dance (two of my other favorite things in life). I work as a freelance graphic designer, as well as a photographer and professional dancer. I have experience in event design, social media marketing design, print design, illustration, video and photo editing, typography, package design, and MORE!

I am an artist at heart, as a human and as a designer. I tend to think creatively about things, and look at life through a visual eye. For me, design is an outlet for creativity, being interested in particularly typography, print design, and performative design. I am interested in ways that we can communicate visually, and make work that is compelling and thought-provoking.

I believe that to design is to be curious. I strive to intersect the idea that visual design requires rules with the idea of breaking those rules. While there are objective parameters for design to be “good”, I believe that great design pushes the boundaries. My philosophy as a designer is to be able to experiment and explore how something is communicated visually, and to not limit myself to the possibilities that exist. Through this I can create designs that feel authentic to me, that is individual, unique, and exciting. Staying curious to opportunities that can present themselves when I break from the standard rules of design inspires me to create my own idea of “greatness”.

In addition, I hope to use design as an interdisciplinary mode of exploration. I strive to create art that intersects design with my other passions, such as music, dance, and film. I believe that this allows for my work to have deeper meaning, and for it to be more personal to me. It allows me to think about how different mediums might communicate certain ideas and concepts better than others. In addition, I feel that it allows the work to transcend individual meaning and allow for connection with others, with people who share these same passions, or who may be curious to them.

Moving forward as a designer, I hope to create design that has a strong impact, whether that be to the cause of social justice issues and change for society, or to simply to impact the viewer. Regardless of what form of design I am creating, I hope that it can spark curiosity, passion, or interest in anyone who sees it. To me, the design is successful when a viewer is drawn to look at it for longer, to wonder about its purpose or meaning, or to simply feel intrigued. Making work that I feel is compelling prompts conversation and has layers to its meanings for myself and for others.
